Hope or Warning?
Most of what I write when I choose it myself is dark, morally grey, and a warning against what might lead to that sort of world. I love to show the flaws in good intentions, or the danger of unintended consequences. My main characters are rarely happy with their lot. But that’s me writing for me.
A while back I got a very interesting commission for worldbuilding along with some character and location outlines. That project is still in its pre-pre-production, and I really can’t give away much detail, but I’d like to share what I can. The starting point was a world that collapsed due to climate change and lack of sustainable planning. But after this collapse, society has rebuilt itself with sustainability at its core. Much of it uses solarpunk tropes, guiding the player to to the collecting and fighting that’s the core loop. As the player progresses, they get to interact with sustainable technologies that allows them to develop better chances against enemies. Said enemies are remnants, literally or spiritually, of the world that couldn’t last. But I made sure to write potential storylines to show the player how to convert unsustainable methods to sustainable ones. Not to just destroy.
My point here is that it’s fun to write different perspectives. I might return to my dystopias and horror stories, but it’s nice to know that there’s also hope out there.
